The spectacled bear ( tremarctos ournatus), also known as the Andean bear, south american bear or Andean short- face bear
Spectacled bears is  one of the eight bear species in the world and are the only surviving species of bear native to South America, and the only surviving member of the subfamily Tremarctinae.





CHARACTERISTIC


Spectacled  bears in average is between 1.30 and 1.90 meters  high, and weighs on average between 80 and 125 kg, being the larger male than female
-its color is  black or blackish brown, with coarse hair.
-The muzzle is short, light brown or white,
-with white spots that extend around the eyes
-It has five fingers with long claws and not shrink curves, and footpads possess inter hairs that helps you climb trees.
- The spectacled bear is a solitary animal that has a very keen sense of smell
- the spectacled bear ia Diurnal and nocturnal animals, solitary, omnivorous, terrestrial and climbing habits,
their diet is predominantly vegetarian.

Is the last specie of the subfamily Tremarctinae that survive,
but   There have been some cases that have been spectacled bears in different countries of South America such as Argentina and Panama bolivia Peru Venezuela Colombia ecuador, for  this reason it is also known such   South American Bear

FOOD






is considered the only vegetarian bear.
Although it is a carnivorous mammal belonging to the order, the spectacled bear diet consists of only 4% by other animals such as rodents, birds and insects.
This species mainly feeds on fruits, bromeliads, bark, palm trees, berries and cactus














HÁBITAT


The Spectacled Bear lives mainly in most of the most forest and glass lands in places upper 3,200 meters above the sea level.
This specie covers the Andes Cordillera from the west of
Venezuela to the north of Argentina, it includes Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru.
However you can see some of them in costal deserts, and
semiarid areas upper 250 mm.







REPRODUCTION



The Spectacled Bear female reaches sexual maturity at 4 years of age

The formation of breeding pairs is between March and October, and the coupling is made after the procession during which the couple fight and play until the female is ready to mate. All this occurs while the female is in her menstrual cycle, which lasts for 1-5 days.

The gestation period lasts from BEAR GLASSES between 6 and 8 months, after which the female gives birth to 2 babies born with a weight of 300-500 grams.

The lactation period extends until the fourth month of life of the cubs, but the mother stays with them at least until they reach their first birthday.

                                         






CUSTOMS

The Spectacled Bear is a solitary animal, diurnal and nocturnal with arboreal customs like recollection of fruits and berries.
Although the spectacled bear doesn't hibernate like the others bears. For that reason it is necessary the spectacled bear makes platforms like nests in the tree's branches which help him as support to recollect his food, and take a break too. The platforms are made through coupling leaves and branches from the same tree where it is made.
There are cases which the spectacled bear makes tunnels between the thick vegetation building roads which he identify with pheromones.

          

WHY IS ENDANGERED THE SPECTACLED BEAR?



Some researchers believe that there are currently no more than 18,000 spectacled bears in the wild throughout the Andes, which is more than 7,000 km in length, so its population density is very low.
Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador are the countries with the largest populations of this species,
Natural enemies of the Spectacled Bear are the jaguar and puma,
but it is the man who has contributed more to decimate their population

the principal reason are
1.-Habitat loss is the main problem facing the Spectacled Bear, given that you live in cloud forests are rapidly disappearing due to deforestation caused by shifting cultivation, forest fires and logging wood.

2.-The Spectacled Bear is the victim of indiscriminate hunting and poaching for being considered a threat to livestock and corn fields. Also died because of pesticides that are sprayed on fields.

3.-The man kills because Existence pointing an unfounded belief that his claws have healing properties and to extract their fur for coats.
4.-Another threat that affects the Spectacled Bear is illicit trafficking to be used as pet circus, where it is subjected to numerous abuses.



PROPOUSALS




Due to the spectacled bear is endangered by the destruction of their habitat, hunting and other factors can prevent the endangered following the next stepsIt
is important and urgent to protect this species, conserving the forests where they live, hunt and prevent smuggling, and banish the myth of his claws as medicine
-make campaigns to raise awareness among people who kill these animals for personal gain or consignment so that they know the importance of this animal and before help protect

-make campaigns so that people do not contribute to the purchase of skins or parts of this animal

-create laws, rules and ordinances that prohibit and punish people who hunt these animals

-create places in which these animals can mate and to be returned to their habitat

  1. Think you'll find Andean bears habitat is on a different elevation range to jaguars. Only cubs are prayed upon, once bears reach adulthood there are no real natural predators other than us humans.
